“It was not a university women’s club, although most of its members either had been graduated from or had attended college.  It was not ‘social,’ whatever that means, although again many of these members would have been called social by generally accepted standards.  Also, it was not political, although many were vitally interested in politics, and in years to come were to be active participants.  And another thing it was not was a charitable organization, even though probably each member was engaged in some endeavor to help benefit the lot of mankind.  It was in all truth a cosmopolitan club.”
