The Cosmopolitan Club of Philadelphia is a private women’s organization, proud of its tradition but with a decidedly modern outlook. Born in the 1920s from a need among genteel ladies to interact with others of a similar bent, the founding mothers – self-annointed “Foreign Devils” because many were not native Philadelphians – had become acquainted through their activities in charitable and civic organizations. The purpose of the Club, as the by-laws subsequently stated, was “to bring together women in the Philadelphia region who are involved in creative or professional work, who are or who have been engaged in cosmopolitan and civic affairs, and the world of arts and ideas.” Today, those ideals are manifested in a vital and engaged membership of exceptional women. |
